We made the music video for Luke Wallace's song "Sons and Daughters," filmed across Salt Spring Island with the sons of two good friends, a folk song about children, land, and food.
Luke Wallace is a Vancouver-based folk musician who came to us to make a music video for his song "Sons and Daughters." We shot it across Salt Spring Island, in the forest and along the water, with two young boys at the heart of it.
We made the music video for Luke Wallace's song "Sons and Daughters," shot across Salt Spring Island with the sons of two good friends of ours and Luke's. It is a folk song about our children's connection to land and food, and we tried to film it plainly, in real places, letting the coast and the kids do the work.
Who is Luke Wallace?
Luke Wallace is a performer, songwriter, and speaker who hails from the Coast Salish Territory known as Vancouver. Over a decade of touring, recording, and organising, he has built a body of folk music that champions environmental causes, earning him a reputation as a kind of modern-day Pete Seeger. In 2023 he was a feature performer at the United Nations Water Conference, the first of its kind in a generation, and his latest album is "The Dandelion Resistance." "Sons and Daughters" celebrates the importance of our children's connection to land and food. It is a quiet, hopeful thing, less a lecture than an invitation, the kind of song that trusts a child in a garden or on a shoreline to say what needs saying. That trust shaped every decision we made behind the camera.
Where was the music video filmed?
The music video was shot throughout Salt Spring Island, in the forest and along the water we know well. The two boys we filmed are the sons of good friends of both Luke and ours, which meant nobody was performing for the lens. They were simply themselves in familiar ground, and that ease is the whole point.
