Every Saturday from April through October, Centennial Park in Ganges becomes something worth showing up for. Farmers, artists, bakers, makers, musicians, herbalists, jewellers, woodworkers. The full range of what this island produces, gathered into one place, week after week.
The Salt Spring Island Saturday Market Is One of the Best Places to See What This Island Is Made Of
The talent here is real. The people behind the stalls have spent years, sometimes lifetimes, refining what they do. Walking through on a Saturday morning is a reminder that Salt Spring Island holds an extraordinary concentration of creative and agricultural skill, and that most of it is quietly going about its work without much fanfare.
Throughout the season I'll be documenting as many Saturdays as I can make it out. This page is home to those photographs.
Portraits of the Salt Spring Island Saturday Market Vendors and Artisans
For me, the market is also one of the best opportunities I have to connect with our local artisans in a genuine way. Sitting down with someone to make their portrait, even briefly, even in the middle of a busy market morning, creates a moment of real exchange. It's one of the things I value most about this work.

Visiting the Salt Spring Island Saturday Market
In 2026 the market runs every Saturday from 4 April to 31 October, 9am to 3pm, and until 4pm through the summer. It fills Centennial Park in Ganges and carries on along the road frontage and into the Ganges Alley parking lot. Every vendor has to make, bake or grow what they sell and has to sell it themselves, which is why there are no resellers here and nothing on the tables came from off-island. Season dates and any changes are posted by the Salt Spring Island Saturday Market Society.

When is the Salt Spring Island Saturday Market in 2026? +
Every Saturday from 4 April to 31 October 2026, 9am to 3pm, and until 4pm through the summer. There are usually two or three more markets in December.
Where is the Saturday Market held? +
Centennial Park in Ganges, on Salt Spring Island. The stalls run along the road frontage and carry on through the centre and parkside of the Ganges Alley parking lot.
Can you bring a dog to the Saturday Market? +
No. A local bylaw keeps dogs out of both the market and the park. The BCSPCA runs a doggy daycare beside the market from early May to the Labour Day weekend, twenty dollars an hour with a one hour maximum per dog.
Do the vendors take cards, or should you bring cash? +
Bring cash. Some stalls take cards, but not all of them do, and cash is the thing that always works.
What is the difference between the Saturday Market and the Tuesday market? +
The Saturday Market is the large one: arts, crafts, farm stalls, prepared food and music. The Tuesday Farmers Market is food only, in the same park, 1.30pm to 5.30pm, and it runs from late spring to the last Tuesday in October. There are photographs from the Tuesday market here too.
What time is best to arrive? +
Early, if there is something particular you are after. Baked goods and the first of the season's produce tend to go before noon. Later in the day is quieter and easier to walk through.
Can you photograph the vendors? +
Ask first. Most people are happy to be photographed at their own stall, and asking is what makes it an exchange rather than a grab. Every portrait on this page was made with the person's agreement.
